Escalante Wilderness

The Grand Staircase - Escalante National Monument offers some of the most spectacular photography in Utah. Just south of Capitol Reef National Park and west of Canyonlands National Park, the Escalante monument spreads across 1.7 million acres of red rock canyons, cliffs and mesas, natural bridges and arches, rivers, streams, deserts, and forests. Established in 1996, the monument is accessed either from State Route 12 from the north or U.S. Highway 89 from the south. Zion National Park and Bryce Canyon National Park are on the west. The Waterpocket Fold forms the Escalante monument’s eastern border, and parts of Lake Powell and the Colorado River lie within its southern boundary.
